I love WordPress.
This is a WordPress site. And I have found myself helping other people, more and more, start setting up their web presence, by showing them the ropes with this excellent software.
WordPress, if you didn’t know, is a blogging platform that is made by and for the WordPress community. It is an Open Source project which means many hundreds of people are working on it, modifying, tweaking, contributing, designing new themes, plugins, code etc, all the time, from across the world.
It is a phenomenal success, with tens of millions of users.
How to WordPress
There are two ways you can make your own site using WordPress. The simplest – but less flexible way – is to join WordPress.com where you can log in and be creating your own WordPress-based blog in seconds. The other way takes a little more time but is so much more rewarding, is to visit WordPress.org and download the software script. And you will need to download it to a web host with certain basic requirements:
Lastly, you’ll need to buy your site’s name! From then on the only thing that can limit you is your imagination. There are so many widgets, plugins and themes available, your site will be completely unique. The possibilities are endless.
WordPress Support
There is a vast wealth of support available through the forums and the WordPress Codex – so help is never too far away as it is a very active community. For example, if you’re worried your host may not be suitable for hosting WordPress, they even provide the letter you can send them!
I’m interested in running the open-source WordPress <http://wordpress.org/> blogging software and I was wondering if my account supported the following:
- PHP 5.2.4 or greater
- MySQL 5.0 or greater
- The mod_rewrite Apache module
Thanks!
Well, I’m going to gather all my notes, collect some of the videos I have found most useful and start making a resource here for those interested in starting a website with WordPress. Let me know what you’d be most interested in seeing.
